Men in Polygamous Cultures Live Longer

It's in the news, so it must be true. Men who live in polygamous cultures live 12% longer than men who don't.

Virpi Lummaa, an ecologist at the University of Sheffield, suggested that after accounting for socioeconomic differences, men aged over 60 from 140 countries that practice polygamy to varying degrees lived on average 12% longer than men from 49 mostly monogamous nations.

Actually, this is quite an innovative and careful study, and factors out the gross national product of the culture, the "grandfather" effect, and other variables. You can read more at

Study suggests polygamy may lead to a longer life.

Chris Wilson, an evolutionary anthropologist at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, believes the care and attention of several wives who depend on the social status of their ageing husband could explain everything.

"It doesn't surprise me that men in those societies live longer than men in monogamous societies, where they become widowed and have nobody to care for them."

It makes sense to me. But the flip side I would think would be that it could be more strenuous and/or stressful. At least in our house I see that at times. I wonder if it prolongs the lives of wives too.

I read that women outlive men due to the fact that so many more people are dependant on their survival - ie. kids. So on that note, it would make sense that men in polygamy live longer as well.

On another note, the title says polygamous cultures...that may be due to the way of life and health choices in those cultures, and not necessarily polygamy.

I suppose the more wives, the more one has to live for. :)

what about the women having multiple male partners? I have to wonder if any of you agree with that? Also, you always hear about polygamy being that the man has two wives and the two wives might become friends or just not converse, is there ever a relationship in which there is a love triangle? As a bisexual, I have dreamt about possibly have a husband and wife...

It make sense to ease the mind of people on the issue of polygamy as relating to the Christian faith. We have suffered so many things as christian and our women have subjected themselves to a life of torture in the name of feeling jealous when their husband makes an attempt to get another wife. We need to live above DIVORCE syndrome. The excuses we give to allow us get another wife as a man is completely irrelevant. We are created with polygamous nature and once you are keyed in that direction, just play safe and encourage all understanding to all level. ....polygamous will help keep our societies safer if done using the right approach.

the word Christian should not even be used in the same context with
polygamy. If you have read your bibles you know in the new testament that polygamy was and is forbidden. Disease, confusion, jealousy, sensuality are all worldly and there is nothing Holy or spiritual about it. Shame on you. The reason it does not work is because it is not okay!

Weren't the Patriach's the most beloved of God and they were polygamous? Jesus said he came not to change the religion set forth by the Old Testament but to show people how to apply it. Be careful, you are interpreting the Bible by excluding the old Testament and if you read the last paragraph in the Bible it says that peeople who take away from the Bible will be cursed.

Abdallah,

I think in bible there is proof that ploygamy was accepted during Jesus (PBUH) days and before too, otherwise why he had to set an example for the 10 virgins who will mary one man on one night !!
read it from bible:
1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.[Mathew 25:1-12]

The difference with islam, that it limits to 4 wives only max, and had to be very fair with them, otherwise he has to stay with one only.

Why do we want to control everyone? Government free marriage is the only way to fix this issue. Time to change the argument. Why are we asking the government to control our lives? Why do we want the government to recognize anything? For or against should not be the argument, government free marriage NOW!

Sara,

I like the way you think. If you think about it government would be one of the last things god himself would put on the planet. That being said, we all know what the very first form of government was, right? Yes religion.

Think about it you put any two religions together and they will sometimes fight to the death. If you think god himself would put people in that kind of distruction then, sorry to to say you got a bigger problem than you know.

The fact is this, we are all slaves today, worse than any slavery in time. They and when I say they I mean government, need to keep us blind to that facts, for the simple reason that without us they could not survive.

Believe if you pay taxes to anyone, you are a SLAVE don't ever mistake it for anything else. How could it make sense that two men can raise a child that is not theirs, two women can do the same, but I can not have more than one wife and raise my own? The answer is simple, strength comes in numbers, the system they have created is perfect for their gready little hands.

It's kind of sad to see how desperate we women have become, to lower our self worth to this...sharing a man...smdh
Marriage is a spiritual unity that should be shared between 1 man n 1 woman...Why are we as women spoiling these men into allowing them to live as pharaohs when they clearly aren/t? Are these men able to support you as wives? By support I mean in terms of money, material, emotional, spiritual, mental, physical & sexual...Or does "PIMP DADDY" wanna reap the benefits of having more than 1 sex partner & more than 1 paycheck come in? And don't dare fight me on that comment, because if (as most polygamists do)these guys keep referring to how in the Bible (OLD TESTAMENT) GOD allowed multiple wives, WELL THEN WHY NOT BEHAVE LIKE IN THE BIBLE N WOMEN WE KEEP OUR ROLES AS HOUSEWIVES & YOU MEN GO OUT N WORK!!!!

A true Christian would not be so negative and un-accepting of practices. The bible does not condemn it, so why do you? Just because it doesn't say anything about it, does not make it wrong. Modern religion has made it wrong, not God Show me a verse from the bible that says polygamy is wrong, not advocating marriage, but outright that marrying more than one wife is wrong. It doesn't.

@ Lindsey There are certainly poly triads who love each other as a whole, sleeping and loving together, outside of religious dogma, which often seeks to limit poly relationships into traditional limitations.
Polyandary (2 or more husbands to one woman) is less common, but often seen in places where women are scarce, or a choice by a woman loves 2 men equally.
